Practice — Teacher Guide
In Practice, students practice the words from their word lists across ten short exercises, and each answer determines when the word will appear again.
The student receives one word at a time from their word lists: choosing the correct word for a definition, typing what they hear, arranging the letters in order. Each answer changes a strength value for the word, and this strength determines when the word appears again.
How it works
The words are retrieved from the word lists the student owns or follows, not from a fixed curriculum list. Everyone is automatically enrolled in the default list for their level, so words are ready even if the student has not created any lists themselves. If the student goes to Practice without selecting a list, the system first clears out words that are due for review when they have accumulated; otherwise, words are pulled from the default list.
A session retrieves up to 50 words. The queue is mixed: around 60 percent words the student has seen before, sorted by how much they need review, and 40 percent new words, introduced as three familiar words followed by two new ones. Words the student knows well and practiced less than three days ago are skipped.
Each answer changes the word's strength on a scale from 0 to 100: correct on the first try gives +8, correct on the second try +3, otherwise −5. At 80, the word is considered mastered, and the student gets the Mastered! badge. The strength determines the next review: 80 and above gives seven days, 50–79 gives three days, 20–49 gives one day, and below that, the word returns on the same day. This means it is spaced repetition, not random cramming.
At the top of the exercise are Change exercise, Change list, Settings, and Statistics. A "?" button opens How to do it with steps and tips for the current exercise, and the text can be translated into the student's own language using Translate. The session ends with Great job!, the number of words the student practiced, and Practice again.
The games
Ten exercises, plus Random which alternates between them:
- Find the word — choose the word that matches the definition
- Find definition — choose the definition that matches the word
- Complete sentence — choose the word missing from the sentence
- Arrange sentence — put the words in the correct order
- Arrange the word — put the letters in the correct order
- Flashcards — flashcards where the student flips and self-assesses with Hard, OK, or Easy
- Translate — translate sentences between Norwegian and the native language
- Dictation — listen and type, as Sentence or Word, with Speed and New voice
- Find synonyms — match pairs of words and synonyms
- Word and image — connect words to the correct image
The student's level determines which exercises appear first under Select exercise; the rest are found under Show more and can still be selected. Under Settings, the student decides which exercises Random should draw from.
Who it is for
A0 and A1 benefit the most from Find the word, Arrange the word, and Word and image, where image and audio support comprehension. From A2 onwards, Arrange sentence and Dictation become meaningful, because the student then has enough grasp of word order to hear what is missing. Find synonyms is added for B1 and B2. Translate requires that the student has set their native language under Account.
Practice trains vocabulary: recognition, spelling, and listening at the word level. Continuous text, pronunciation, and conversation are trained elsewhere — use Write and Speaking for that.
Suggestions for working with Practice
- Create a word list for the topic in Word lists and share it with the group. The students then start from the list page, and the words they practice are the same ones you read about in class.
- Set aside five minutes at the start of class where everyone goes to My words and clicks Due for review. This allows them to clear out the words that are actually overdue, instead of practicing what they already know.
- Assign Weak words as a regular task for those who are falling behind. The button retrieves the words with the lowest strength, targeting the effort where it matters most.
- Select one exercise for the whole class at a time using Change exercise, so you can discuss the same topic afterward: Dictation before a writing session, Arrange sentence when working on word order.
- Ask students to open How to do it the first time they try a new exercise and translate it into their own language. This saves you from explaining the rules ten times.
- Open a student in Groups and view words started, words mastered, and average strength. Use these numbers to identify who needs a custom list next week.
Good to know
- Words follow the language the student is learning. Norwegian and English words are kept in separate decks, so a student who switches course languages only sees the relevant words.
- Practicing a shared list enrolls the student in it. If a student opens a share link and starts practicing, the list is added to Word lists, so they can find their way back to it later.
- Time counts as learning time. Practice is logged as learning time and counts toward the daily streak, and word counts and strength are displayed under My words and Progress.
- Translate and Dictation receive AI feedback. The feedback is written in Norwegian adapted to the student's level, so an A1 student receives short sentences with common words.
