Groups — Teacher Guide

The group is your classroom in Språki: you share assignments, texts, audio stories, and word lists with the class all in one place, and track the progress of each student.

You post assignments and content in the group stream, and students will find everything in one place when they log in. Under Members, you can also see how the class is progressing — who has been active this week, and who has not.

How it works

A group has two tabs: Stream and Members. In the stream, you post using the Post button, where you can choose:

  • Writing task — opens the task tool with the group pre-selected
  • Vocabulary list — your own lists or a public list you search for
  • Message — free text for the class, and you can paste links
  • Read, Listening stories, Book, Podcast, Picture dictionary, and Conversation

When you share, you will be prompted to Add a message to the students (optional) — this is where you write what they should do with the content.

The newest posts appear at the top. Use Pin to top for posts that should remain there, or Move to top to bring up an older post. Students will see a New badge on content added since their last visit and will receive a notification via the bell icon.

Teachers in the group are the ones who post; students read, open the content, and complete the tasks.

How students join

Students do not join on their own, and there is no code to enter. You add them yourself:

  1. Go to Groups and select Manage groups.
  2. Select Members for the relevant group.
  3. Search for the student by name and click Add.

The student must already have an account within your organization — see How do my students get accounts?. The account role determines their role in the group: teachers are added as Teacher, students as Student. A student can be part of multiple groups, and Remove removes them.

You create new groups using Create group. All teachers and administrators with an organization account can see all the organization's groups here and edit their members. When you create a group, Add me as a teacher in the group is enabled by default — uncheck it if you are setting up the group for a colleague.

Who it is for

Groups are suitable where one or more teachers follow a set class over time: adult education, introductory programs, primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary schools. This requires a school license, as students must have an account with you.

The stream is a notice board, not a discussion thread: students do not reply there; they submit their work in the writing tasks, where you can respond to them directly.

Suggestions for working with Groups

  1. Post the weekly plan as a Message on Monday and use Pin to top so it stays at the top all week.
  2. Share a reading text and a listening story on the same topic, and write in the message what they should look and listen for.
  3. Share the vocabulary list for the next topic before starting it, and ask the class to practice in Practice. The table under Members shows how many words have been practiced over the last seven days.
  4. Assign a Writing task with a deadline. If it is a test, hold back Språki's feedback and click Release feedback once you have reviewed it. Class overview highlights what the class should work on in the next lesson.
  5. Share a Conversation as spoken homework, so students have talked about the topic before class.
  6. Do a Friday check in Members: the dimmed rows are the students who have not been active.

Good to know

  • You can see activity and submissions. The table under Members shows the level, streak, time spent today and in the last seven days, distribution between Read, Listen, Speak, Write, Practice, and Workplace Norwegian, active days, and number of submissions. Clicking on a student gives you their activity calendar, statistics per feature, difficult words, and writing tasks. You can read the actual text when it is a response to an assignment from you, or when the student has independently shared a text they wrote; conversations and practice are shown as counts and time spent. Students do not see these statistics.
  • You can adjust the level. On the student's page, click the level badge and select A0, A1, A2, B1, or B2. This is the same level the student has on their account.
  • Archive the group when the course is finished. Archive group makes it read-only: the content remains accessible to read, but no one can edit anything. The group is collected under Archived groups, and a teacher in the group can Restore group at any time.
  • Teachers in a group have equal permissions. Any teacher in the group can pin and move posts, including those shared by a colleague, and view submissions and student statistics.
